Reflection on 2011

Well it’s been quite a year. A little tough at the start trying to get back into the swing of Melbourne after the “fantasy land” as I like to think of London. A definite change of pace but now I’ve fallen back in love with place.
I’ve never had as serious an injury as a ruptured Achilles tendon before. Never have I experienced so much rehabilitation. I hate to hazard a guess on how many trips to the physio I’ve gone to this year. I’m running jogging again though and that feels great. I’ve learned that I don’t enjoy swimming or perhaps chasing a black line on the bottom of the pool is not my thing. I’m keen to do a 15km run in April 2012 – the one I was due to do the day after I ruptured my Achilles playing hockey. On that subject I’m keen to get back to playing again – some say I’m a glutton for punishment but I really enjoy the team sports.
Work is keeping me busy and I’m really enjoying it on the whole, but looking back this time last year thinking what may be I had not imagined where we would be. I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved in such a short time.

2012 – more of the same but better? Who knows! Apart from my usual resolutions I think I’m setting one just to enjoy and experience what life throws up. Travel definitely.. To all my family and friends I wish you all the best for the coming year!

The Injury!

Well to say it was a shock when the physio said “it’s not your calf it’s your achilles” is an understatement, but when the orthopaedic surgeon says you will be away from normal activity for 4 – 6 months is pretty confronting.

So to cut the long story short I’m currently in a plaster cast to reduce the swelling before surgery next week. After the procedure it is another 1 – 2 weeks resting with an elevated foot, followed by 6 – 8 weeks in a Cam Walker Boot to ensure the foot stays in a fixed range of motion.

I’m learning to love crutches – I still can’t get over how much they slow you down.

The Market Pub Website is LIVE!

The day has arrived
Well done to my brother-in-law for getting The Market Pub‘s website up and running – it looks great, but don’t take my word for it – check it out!
BTW – if you are thinking of spending time in Derbyshire make sure you pop-in – it’s awesome!

Melbourne – Great Food and Wine

After a couple of months back we are starting to settle into Melbourne life. There is a definite change of pace from London, thankfully Richmond is right in the thick of it. I couldn’t imagine living further out in the ‘burbs (just yet). One thing I have noticed is the amount of rain we have had here is massive in comparison to previous years. No real summer to speak of but some days have been ridiculously humid – like tropical Queensland weather!

Now with summer officially over, Melbourne’s autumn has come into its own. Katherine and I along with some old friends headed down to the South Wharf precinct for an afternoon of food and wine tasting from regional Victoria. What a great day it was for it – so lucky!

I must get on with the task of editing the photos from our trip last year… I just keep procrastinating about it! I can’t believe the changes that have happened since we were in the Middle East.

Talking about holidays we’re looking at flights to the UK (and Mykonos for a friend’s 30th) in mid-to-late-August. Hopefully the summer kicks on a bit in the UK this year but I’m not holding my breath!

Anyway – back to these photos!

The Sun is Shining on the Red Sea

A quick post while I have free Wi-Fi in the Mecure Hotel we are staying at in Dahab, Egypt which is on the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aqaba.

We have been in relaxation mode – snorkelling, swimming, sun baking… just brilliant, before the sightseeing recommences in Jordan.

I hope everyone is well – and to let you know that “touch wood” we are in good health.

Welcome to Egypt

Right – they let us into Egypt… can’t believe how big Cairo is – 23 million people and it has grown so much that basically Giza and Cairo are now connected up… coming from the airport our driver says “if you look to your left – yes they are pyramids” – cool!

The Exodus Trip 2010 – Part 1

Katherine and I are well having just survived a 9 hour train journey into Budapest (Hungary) from Ljubljana (Slovenia). It was an early start for us both but it’s nice to arrive mid-afternoon with the sun still shining rather than at night where anything can happen!

Our trip so far has taken us from Vernazza (Italy) which is one of the five towns (Cinque Terre) on the north-western coast of Italy. We were really lucky with the weather here as it’s very much an outdoor activity setup. Lots of beautiful trails along the coast and into the hills. I really fallen back in love with my Nikon D40X now that I’ve fitted the 18mm – 200mm lens which as well as the awesome telephoto zoom has vibration reduction tech in it which is making my night photographs so much better! I really enjoy taking night shots without a flash!

From the Cinque Terre we caught a train to Milan. What a contrast – the coastal town for the inland city and (unfortunately) sun for rain. We nevertheless enjoyed our time here – I wish I had taken a photo of the Prada storefront window in such a way I could capture in the same frame, the coolest knee-high women’s boots you have ever seen, the price tag (€18,000 – no typo),  and Katherine’s face.

From Milan we caught a pretty sweet modern train (it turns out it was owned by SBB not TrenItalia) to Venice. Coming out of the train station in the late afternoon sun, the scene took my breath away – what an amazing sight of canals and boats “wizzing” by – it was so beautiful. Then it started to rain…

To cut it short , Venice did redeem itself though and we had some great times and great food. We had good recommendations from the owner of the guesthouse we stayed in, which made it a lot cheaper than it could have otherwise have been. We spent one of the days travelling the smaller islands of Murano and Burano, where we came up against “Acqua alta” (high water). We didn’t have to wait long though a nice sit-down lunch and the footpaths were passable.

From Venice we got a bus (well it was a minibus) across the border to Slovenia. It was a pretty quick trip (3 hours) then again our driver was doing an average speed of 130km/h on the autostrade – not too shabby. Caught another bus from Ljubljana to Bled, which brings you pretty much upto date. I won’t say a lot about Bled except that it’s beautiful, stunning, amazing, <insert another synonym for beautiful> and if you get a chance, go and see the place and the surrounding country side. Great for families, great for singles, great for couples… go in the summer months but we weren’t disappointed by the off-season.

So now we have another four days in Budapest before heading down to Cairo to start our Middle Eastern tour of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. I plan to update you once we arrive in Turkey and I get a chance to sit down with an Efes (beer) and a good wi-fi connection.

For now – keep well and keep in touch either via e-mail or Facebook (or feel free to leave a comment).

Another Chelsea Win!

Chelsea 2 – Marseille 0

We didn’t get out of second gear and we still won. I reckon UEFA need to sort out this Champions League Group stage, because it’s really not a spectacle. Sure it’s nice to see your team win but I don’t think I’d pay £30 quid to see a match like this.

Not long until we are out of here and European football is on at 5am Melbourne time. I’m going to miss Sky Sports HD!

Packing and Monza F1 GP Weekend

Well the countdown has commenced. The shipping boxes arrived this morning and it’s all becoming more real. Under 8 weeks before finishing up work and then a two month holiday… no fixed address!

Christmas in Adelaide then Melbourne in the new year… all fun… the Europe experience coming to an end.

The Amazing Race Is Over

The last ones to arrive….

In saying that, it’s not bad to have a weekend at home since, well, I can’t honestly remember! In the last little while we’ve seen places and had the most relaxing time-off too.

Sailing the islands of Croatia for a week was great. Not wearing a watch with the mobile phone off is an amazing thing. It’s great forgetting what day it is losing all track of time.

St. Petersburg, Moscow, Isle of Wight, San Sebastian, Brighton, Silverstone, Chesterfield, Goodwood, Côte d’Azur (French Riviera) – wow!
